A missed deadline does not unmake everything you’re still able to do next. Those are two separate questions, and most people only ever answer the first one.

A small gray star sits next to the rejection email. She could delete the message in one tap. She doesn’t, because some part of her wants it where she can find it, like proof she’s keeping in case anyone asks her to justify herself.
Her hands stop typing mid-sentence. She deletes the opening line of the new application and replaces it with something smaller, something that asks for less, something that won’t be as embarrassing to have wanted if it doesn’t work out.

What’s actually being said is narrower: the mistake and your capability are two different facts, and only one of them belongs in this application.
The two get fused because admitting a flaw and feeling unworthy have shared the same sentence for so long, in the same order, that the brain stops checking whether they’re actually one claim or two.
