The Gap Between Working And Ready

Home - Quotes - Business & Entrepreneurship Quotes

It takes around five years to create a commercial product that takes advantage of a technology window.

Something can be technically finished and still not be ready for anyone but its creator.

WHAT THIS MEANS

A prototype that works is not the same thing as a product someone else can use without you standing next to them explaining it.

That gap does not close because the technology is done. It closes through a slower process: watching real people misuse it, rebuilding the parts that confused them, and repeating that until it holds up without you there.

WHERE THIS SHOWS UP

The prototype catches the light at a strange angle when she tilts it, and she turns it again to check. This is the fourth time tonight. The seams are clean, the function works, every test she has run has passed. She still hasn’t told anyone it’s done.

She’s halfway through typing the launch announcement when she stops and rereads the line about it being “ready to use.” Her cursor sits there. She moves the whole thing to drafts instead of posting it, telling herself she’ll finish it tomorrow when she has more time to explain the setup steps properly.

Marcus walks a new hire through the same rough edge in the tool, the one that still needs a workaround, for the third time this month. He knows this part by heart now. He watches her face do the same thing every new person’s face does, and he wonders, not for the first time, why this piece never got smoothed out before anyone else started using it.

DEEPEN THE PERSPECTIVE

The Price Tag Lies
Something can look like a smart buy and still be the wrong one — here’s why. “It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.” — Warren Buffett

Built To Outlast The Moment
Chasing what impresses right now can quietly cost you what actually holds up. “We want to own either all or a portion of businesses that enjoy good economics that are fundamental and enduring.” — Warren Buffett

THE HIDDEN ASSUMPTION

The Ready-Now Assumption – Once something works, people assume it is finished, when working and finished are two different states separated by everything that happens after the first version runs.

THE SHIFT

Somewhere between the working version and the one anyone else can use, the difference stops being visible from the inside. She can see every seam holding, every test passing, every piece performing the way it’s supposed to. What she can’t see from here is what happens when someone without her explanations tries to use it.

WHAT THIS IS NOT SAYING

People often hear this as a five-year waiting period, something to sit through before they’re allowed to begin.

That’s not what the gap is for. The five years is not a holding pattern before starting. It’s the work itself: the version people actually use, tested and rebuilt against real friction, not a countdown you wait out before touching anything.

The waiting reading feels safer to hear, because “not yet” is easier to accept than “the work you already did is only the first part of the work.”

LIMITS & OBJECTIONS

You might think: if I wait for this to feel fully ready, I could miss the window it was supposed to fit into.

That’s a real risk, and some ideas do need to reach people early, rough edges included, so the gaps show up while there’s still time to close them.

Where this fails is a version that goes out too early to survive contact with real use: it confuses the first people who try it, and there’s no second chance to make a first impression.

The competing principle is that some readiness only reveals itself in public, not in private testing. Shipping early can be how the real gap gets found in the first place.
