The event never tells you what it means. You do.

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two people get the same text. Same words, same timing, same silence after. One feels brushed off. The other feels nothing worth noting. The text did not change. What changed is the meaning each person attached to it before they felt anything at all.

That meaning gets picked fast, almost too fast to notice, and the feeling that follows treats the meaning like a fact.

WHERE THIS SHOWS UP

  •  A phone sits face up on the table, screen still lit from the last check. The message underneath it has not changed in eleven minutes. She has read it twice already, and the second reading felt the same as the first: certain.
  • At the next desk, a coworker watches her glance at the phone for the third time and says, “Maybe they’re just busy.” She nods like she agrees, but the words don’t land anywhere. She has already decided what the silence means, and a coworker’s guess can’t compete with that.
  • She tells people she is “someone who needs answers right away.” It has become a fact about her, the way height or handwriting is a fact. Asked why a delayed reply bothers her this much, she gives a short, frustrated shrug, like the question itself is the annoying part.

DEEPEN THE PERSPECTIVE

The Feeling Behind the Price Value isn’t on the tag — it’s whatever your mind decides to feel. “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” — WARREN BUFFET

Where Meaning Actually Lands Someone else’s mind builds meaning the same way yours does, just aimed outward instead of in. “Value is something people feel, not something we tell them they get.” — SIMON SINEK

THE HIDDEN ASSUMPTION

Already Decided – By the time a feeling shows up, the meaning behind it has already been chosen and forgotten about. The feeling arrives second, but it feels first, so it gets treated as the whole story instead of the result of one.

 THE SHIFT

A coworker hears the same silence and shrugs it off. She hears it and is certain. Same elven minutes, same blank screen, two different facts about what’s happening.

Only one of them picked a meaning fast enough to forget picking it.

WHAT THIS IS NOT SAYING

This is not claiming the feeling itself is fake or imagined. The feeling is real the moment it shows up. What is being questioned is not whether you feel it, but which meaning produced it, and whether that meaning was the only one available. It sounds like a denial of feeling because feelings arrive so fast and so convincingly that the meaning behind them gets mistaken for the feeling itself.

LIMITS & OBJECTIONS

Some pain does not come from a meaning anyone chose. A real loss can hurt for reasons that have nothing to do with interpretation.

That is true, and it matters. Not every painful moment is a story waiting to be reread.

This idea fails the moment it gets used to wave away someone’s grief or talk them out of a reaction to something that actually happened to them.

The competing principle here is simple: some situations call for sitting with what happened, not searching for a different way to read it.
