There was always something else that needed stabilizing first.

A move, a job change, a relationship, a rough year. Something genuinely consuming. And the money conversation, the real one, the one about building rather than managing kept getting pushed back to when things settled down.

Each postponement felt like a decision made for good reasons. There was no recklessness in it. The thinking was: when the income is more stable, when the debt is cleared, when life is less expensive, when things are easier to predict. All of that made sense at the time.

The thing it was exchanging was not visible on any of those days.

What Each Year Was Actually Trading

One year of deferral does not feel like a cost. It feels like a pause, a temporary holding pattern before the real work begins. The discomfort of engaging with money seriously, of making decisions that require confronting how much ground there is to cover, is real. And the trade, each time, was to avoid that discomfort in exchange for the feeling that there was still time.

That is not stupidity. That is what invisible costs do. They feel worth it right up until the total is visible.

What was being exchanged, per instance, was not money. It was the year when compounding worked the hardest. The years when a small amount, moved early, becomes something different by the time it is needed. You weren’t failing. You were just absorbing costs you’d decided not to count.. The deferral never cost anything on the day it was made. That is exactly why years of it could accumulate without being seen.

What exists now is not ruined. The heron is still there. Still capable. The lake is the same size.

The fish have just been somewhere else for a long time.

The margin that would have been there with an earlier start is now replaced by something narrower, a timeline that requires urgency where ease was once available, decisions made under pressure that could have been made from space. That is not a catastrophe. It is simply what the arithmetic produced.

It already happened. Not as an event as an accumulation.

The next time it offers itself, it will feel exactly the same.

A year that is not quite right yet. Something that needs to be resolved first. A reasonable moment to wait. The exchange will feel like nothing because it will be nothing, on that day, the way it was nothing on every previous day.
